While working on Gajim's account removal dialog, python-nbxmpp received support for In-Band Registration ([XEP-0077](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0077.html)) and further bug fixes for stanza handling.
One of the benefits of using XMPP is freedom of choice. Users are free to choose which server they would like to use (or even host one by themselves), and they can choose from [many available clients](https://xmpp.org/software/clients.html). Sometimes this freedom of choice also comes with clients not behaving after protocol specifications. Gajim has to deal with that, of course. One of these cases where a client was sending malformed stanzas has been fixed recently ([#89](https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/python-nbxmpp/issues/89)).

**Gajim 1.3.0 is almost there and Gajim’s XMPP library python-nbxmpp had its 2.0.0 release! This month brings many bugfixes and a long anticipated feature: direct chat messages for private group chats.**
The first month of 2021 was mostly about bug fixing in preparation of the upcoming 1.3.0 release. Also, [Gajim joined Fosstodon](https://fosstodon.org/@gajim) this month! :tada:
Gajim will now use direct messages in non-anonymous group chats instead of Private Messages (which would be routed through the group chat). This behavior is of course configurable, but the new default will reduce confusion significantly: If you start a chat with a group chat participant of a _private_ group chat, Gajim will open a chat addressed directly to the participant.
Added new debug mode: start gajim with `--gdebug` to see GLib debug messages

This month, [blabber.im](https://blabber.im/) (a popular Conversations fork) has been added, and detection for both [Movim](https://movim.eu/) and [PSI+](https://psi-plus.com/) has been improved.
python-nbxmpp 2.0.0 has been released, featuring JID Escaping ([XEP-0106](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0106.html)), VCard4 ([XEP-0292](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0292.html)), and GSSAPI ([XEP-0233](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0233.html)) support. As covered in previous posts, module calls are now based on Python Generators. Furthermore, the module API has been simplified and harmonized.

Sometimes you need a little quiet time, sometimes it's just a very noisy chat. Chat notifications can be distracting, and Gajim now offers to mute chat notifications. Right click on a chat in your chat list and select for how long you would like to mute a chat.

Gajim 1.8.0 has been released
Gajim 1.8.0
**Gajim 1.8.0 comes with integrated OMEMO encryption! Integrating the OMEMO plugin brings tighter integration and better user experience. We also rearranged the chat menu and added some quick buttons for convenience. Both Gajim's message search and conversation view received some important changes and fixes. Thank you for all your contributions!**
In the past, we moved the most popular plugins into Gajim's core: image preview, plugin installer, HTTP file upload, syntax highlight, and now OMEMO encryption as well. This means: troubles with installing/upgrading the plugin or finding a packaged version of it are _no more_ :tada:
In preparation for future changes (e.g. the next OMEMO version), we forked `python-axolotl`, which is the crypto library used for OMEMO encryption in Gajim. Gajim's fork of this library is called `omemo-dr` (double ratchet, an encryption mechanism) and you can [track its progress here](https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/omemo-dr).

When you start Gajim 1.8.0 you will notice some changes in the chat window: the chat menu moved to the top, and some of its actions are now available via quick action buttons (contact details, sharing infos, and message search). In group chats, you can now search for participants and directly invite someone. Another change concerns group chats: you can now see from the chat list if Gajim is still joining or fetching messages (or if there is an error). When searching for messages, the search box is now displayed to the side of the chat, instead of overlapping it.
